GLAM OR SHAM?: Pre-Grammy Looks from Rihanna, Jay-Z, Katy Perry and more

The Grammy Awards are upon us which means for the last few weeks, stylists, make-up artists, eyelash artists, PR girls and designers have been scrambling to outfit stars in the latest and greatest fashions.

Judging from the latest pics from Pre-Grammy events, some celebs will push the envelope in avant garde looks (a la Rihanna) stay safe and trend-friendly in sequins or silk (like Mary J. Blige and Katy Perry) or show up in a tacky cringe-worthy ensemble that anyone can pick up at your neighborhood Rainbow store (sigh…Ashanti).

Check out the looks from Clive Davis’ and Neyo’s parties below and give your verdict: Who was Grammy Glam and who was a Sham?

Rihanna’s multicolor pastel look was delightfully avant garde but the shape and hue was a lot to take in at once. I will say her light green make-up and polished hair was uberfabulous.

Ciara, is this a joke? The cheap-looking shaggy fur top paired with shorts and knee boots (darling, pick a season) was proportionally and aesthetically all wrong. The loud fashion faux paux is sure to turn heads—just not for the right reasons.

Fergie…the part lingerie/part electrical tape dress would make sense on a Vegas party girl, not a pop star. It is cheap and tacky and looks like it smells like plastic. Sham.

Though Mary J. Blige, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift’s dresses were sequined and safe (aka you could see a thousand of them at any New Year’s shindig or gala), atleast they looked glamorous and presentable. I live for the multicolor sequins on Katy’s dress.
It seems leather was a staple on the red carpet (see Ashanti’s disaster below) but Jennifer Hudson’s trendy purple color, shoulder detail and blunt bangs make the look undeniably chic.
The fellas stole the night. In all black everything, Jay-Z redefined cool in a New York City rockstar vibe with a motorcycle leather jacket, a chain necklace and black separates. Jamie Foxx brought his signature suave style in a one-button blazer with a shirt and tie.

Neyo’s signature fedora, shirt and vest captured his “perfect gentleman” motif to a tee, but I hate the sneakers. English gentleman meets street culture? I’m not buying it. And raise your hand if you’re tired of seeing a fedora on this man at every event…I understand hats are your thing but they make different styles.
Precious star, Gabourey Sidibe wore a black banded sheath dress and…flats? I LOVE Gabourey and what she represents as a full-figured woman in Hollywood who readily embraces her out-of-the-norm body size. But this dress is just not flattering. It makes her look ill-proportioned and does nothing for her shape.

Ashanti is on my list. The gray leather zippered mini is cute, yes. But why did you borrow your sister’s dangly earrings from prom and clip on a blonde, curly weave from the beauty supply store? (Did anybody tell her that her hair doesn’t match in the front?!) No matter how chic she starts off, she always gets it wrong. Sham.
What do you think, Glamazons? Glam or a Sham?

WEEKEND FUN!: 2010 BET Honors in D.C.

Hey Glamazons! I’ve had quite the weekend. The lovely folks at Johnson & Johnson invited moi to come and serve as the official beauty correspondent for the Ambi Flawless Beauty Lounge at this years’ BET Honors awards ceremony. (Ambi was the official sponsor for the afterparty, so my job was to interview celebs on the red carpet before they headed into the party. That’s me pictured there, what do you guys think of my outfit?!) This was my first time ever interviewing celebs in front of a real live camera (yeah, my Flip cam doesn’t count lol). I think I did a pretty good job! I have no problem running my mouth and it turned out to be alot easier than I thought. (The hard part? Standing up for hours in my super cute Jimmy Choos..a day later, my feet are still throbbing..ugh.)
Luckily, I was able to bring a guest so I took my amiga Elaine and we headed off to D.C. on Saturday morning and arrived by later afternoon. (btw who knew that we’d have so much fun on the Amtrak?! I’m now obsessed with trains and thinking of some other places I can go..wouldn’t it be fun to road trip across the U.S. by train?!) We stayed at the new W Hotel and who do we see getting off the elevator as we’re coming in? Maxwell. Yes, the crooner himself. He flashed a smile at us as he walked by and all Elaine and I could do was think that we should have definitely spent more time bumping ourselves to hottie status. (We were definitely just on cute girls travelling status in our glasses and no makeup!)
After getting dressed and ready, our car picked us up and we headed over to the venue where we were immediately asked to walk the red carpet. Eeeek! Neither of us had ever done so and it was kind of an intimidating experience…but by the time we got halfway down, we were throwing angles like pros! (Paris and Nicole got nothin’ on us!) Inside was a mini cocktail party and we meandered around with our drinks and talked to people. A bunch of guys in suits walked over and started talking to us and they turned out to be members of the band Take 6. (I felt like an idiot after I told one of them “Oh my mom loves you guys!” LOL) One of them professed to us that they were performing a song with Stevie Wonder and they’d only had a couple of rehearsals, so hopefully they remembered everything. (Which they did! They all sounded amazing!) As we were walking into the auditorium for the actual show, we look up and notice they we were directly behind the sex God himself, Trey Songz. (Ok, maybe he’s not really a sex God, but he claims to have “invented sex” and between that (and those lips! ooweee!) I think he definitely qualifies as one lol). After a couple of jokes from the L.A. based comedian G Thank (mostly done due to the fact that there were some serious sound issues going on that they were frantically trying to fix lol) the show finally began. Host for the evening was the lovely Gabrielle Union (who later told me that she had a total of 9 dress changes!) and the honorees included Whitney Houston, Queen Latifah, Dr. Ruth J. Simmons, Keith Black, M.D. and Diddy. I had to leave the show a bit early to get set up for my interviews at the after party, so I was I a bit bummed about missing the last half of the show. But, I was so happy that I got to see Patti LaBelle perform live (in honor of Queen Latifah) and Elaine and I couldn’t help but to get up and dance to the old school jams Mary J. Blige sang in honor to Diddy!
While we were waiting for everyone to show up, Elaine and I had a bit of down time and taped an episode of ‘Meeting In The Ladies Room’ (see video clip at the end).
During the afterparty, I was psyched to interview Chris Tucker (but kind of sad that he didn’t crack any jokes!), the lovely Gabrielle Union and Debra Lee (President and CEO of BET). After having a blast dancing and socializing, the crowd started to thin out so Elaine and I headed to the next scene: an after party at this club called Avalon. This turned out to be a huge mistake because it was hot, packed and gross. I was groped by some strange man every two seconds and my neatly coiffed bob was starting to turn into a frizzy mess due to the humidity in the air. Also, my feet were completely dead. (As in, if I moved too much, my knees would start to buckle). The only cool part was chopping it up with the singer Ne-Yo (who declared his love for my cheekbones and nose lol).
We decided to head out and (in typical NY fashion) go to hail a cab; which was not such a good idea considering that we were in the “hood” and there were no taxis to be found…only swarms of men declaring that they would more than happy to take us home! (Ha! I think not!) So, because we couldn’t stand any longer, I flagged down a cop car and begged him to take us home. Of course, he said no and said that the only way that we could ride in the back was if we were under arrest..to which Elaine promptly told him that she didn’t mind being arrested just as long as could get home. At that point, I think he felt sorry for us, so he told us to get in, cut on the emergency sirens and whizzed us back to our hotel. Side note: I have never been arrested nor do I plan on it in the future if only for the reason that riding in the backseat of a cop car is probably one of the most uncomfortable experiences in life!
Anywhoo, below are some of my fave looks from the red carpet. Be sure to check out the show when it airs on February 1 at 9/8 central and my red carpet coverage clips on bet.com!.
Gabrielle Union surprised us all by ditching her usual long, Barbie hair for this cute, elegant braid!
I was smitten with musician Kris Connor! Especially when he stopped to play a tune for Elaine and I…sigh…
Mya looked adorable in this sexy red ball gown!

NeYo looks dapper in this white tuxedo jacket, but my fave part were his eyeglasses. AtotheMazing!

Ad Glam: Ne-Yo in Alfani Red for Macy’s

Confession: when I first heard Ne-Yo would be the spokesperson for Macy’s Alfani Red line, I was skeptical. Though his ever-present fedora adds (slightly) to his fashion credibility, in my opinion, he lacks the innate style and fashion point-of-view of a Kanye, Pharrell or Andre 3000. That is to say he looks like a rerun of Micheal Jackson in Smooth Criminal or the “Rat Pack,” (as he likens himself to in interviews) but cannot claim a distinct look of his own.

The unveiling of the black and white ads yesterday at the Metropolitan Pavilion, however, left me pleasantly surprised. Alfani Red and Ne-Yo fit together as seamlessly as Ne-Yo’s tailored black suit (he looked very dapper…so much so the fedora didn’t annoy me). Alfani Red’s new collection brings youth and modernity to the sharp, sophisticated ‘Rat Pack’ suits of the past and in his brilliant music and timeless style, Ne-Yo aims to do the same. Boasting an impeccable fit and signature red stitching, the collection, which Ne-Yo describes as “bold and sleek,” ranges from $49-325. What struck me specifically was the silhouette – the suits taper slightly at the waist and the streamlined look elongates. Truly, it looks stunning on but don’t take my word for it – see for yourself.

At the event, Ne-Yo made it clear why he is the face of the brand, charming fashion favorites and photographers and even doing the moonwalk between poses. The year of the gentleman, indeed.

His suave demeanor and affinity for the spotlight were captured brilliantly in the ads by Walter Chin who shot the singer/songwriter in Prague. The unveiling of these ads mark the beginning of a one-year deal with Ne-Yo and the Alfani Red line for Macy’s.

What do you think of the ads? Do you think Ne-Yo was the right choice for spokesperson? Will you shop the collection?

Fab or Flop: American Music Awards

Last night, the American Music Awards brought out a bevy of starlets, moguls and celebutantes who served up the glamour and glitz.

Photobucket

Luminaries, like Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift, sparkled in assymetric, metallic minis.

Photobucket

I think Miley stole the show with her black and gold strapless Marchesa dress, which merged the hottest trends of the season, metallic (the shimmery color) and goddess (draping and braided waistline). She was on fire!

Pink cleaned up nicely in a dazzling Vivienne Westwood gown with plenty of beaded embroidery. I loved the hair – the “Rihanna” goes across color lines.

Photobucket

Speaking of which, Princess Rihanna looked darling in a soft yellow ruffled dress by one of her fave designers, Zac Posen, with gloves and jeweled Devi Kroell peeptoe pumps.

Photobucket

One of the big winners of the night, she was just stunning. Never gets it wrong on the red carpet!

P.S. Though…was she channeling Slick Rick in her performance? She always pushes the fashion bar a little bit, which you gotta love.

Photobucket

She’s really starting to look like Prince to me…which is a good thing—he’s gorgeous, but I’m just saying…

Photobucket

Anyway, you be the judge. Who was fab, and who flopped?

I liked Christina Aguillera’s Elie Saab gown (though haven’t I seen her in something just like it before?) but her hair looked like a cheap Marilyn Monroe wig. I love her, but feel like something’s always off…? And what’d you think of that medley? I was secretly waiting for Come On Over…but I’ll get over it. FAB.

Photobucket

The Pussycats got all dolled up in designs from the fiercest bitch of all, Christian Siriano. Though I adored Nicole’s dress and the yellow one was sooo chic, the rest was uninspired to me, and looked like I could pick it up at Bebe. Still FAB.

Photobucket

These two are a hot mess. And wasn’t that the same Dolce & Gabbana gown Kim from Real Housewives of Atlanta wore to Deshawn’s event? For some reason, I think Mariah and Kim would be friends (maybe once her country singing career takes off). Either way, it’s a good look for Mariah. FAB.

Photobucket

P.S. Why did she feel the need to bring Nick Cannon onstage? Who does that? You’re married, we get it. Do we really need to keep seeing him everywhere? And didn’t he make jokes or something on his own? Can we let him get back to that?

Alicia Keys is sweet enough, but the look just wasn’t cohesive. With a Grecian, one-shoulder Armani Prive gown, the Indian-inspired silver bindi came out of nowhere. And I don’t get the earrings. But she’s a natural beauty and shines regardless. Plus I thought her eye make-up, which accented her already exotic eyes, was phenomenal. FAB BY DEFAULT.

Photobucket

Photobucket

I was probably the most surprised by Queen Latifah. She looks tiny (go Jenny)!!! The assymetrical, metallic dress looked beautiful against her skin (as always, she just glows). And though the fit was a bit off, we can forgive that given all the weight she lost. Very glam! And I have to get those hoops once they copy them at Express. FAB.

Photobucket

And what was meaning of this? Why is Toccarra coming out looking like Lil Bo Peep Show?

Photobucket

Definite FLOP.

And let’s not forget about the boysss!

Photobucket

Chris Brown looked amazing! I loved the contrast of the preppy bowtie and cardigan with the biker leather jacket. The pairing was edgy, cool and grown up for him. Looks like Rih’s fashion sense is rubbing off…FAB.

Photobucket

I can’t help but laugh at this picture. All the more reason to praise Chris Brown for making bow ties look cool. FLOP.

Photobucket

Ugh…I don’t know what to say, Kanye. I know you wanted to promote your Pastelle line, but didn’t you know you were going to an Award show tonight? It’s not like you to not try (and that random fur thing you threw on does not count as trying). And to spaz out when you don’t get awards and give the one you win away? I’m worried. FLOP.

Yeah and where was Beyonce on the red carpet?! Bey may have been MIA, but Sasha came onstage and killed it! Easily the best performance of the night. And I need a good superlong weave ponytail that flips around and bounces right back. Loove it! SUPERFAB.

Photobucket

I’d love to meet the Queen who came up with the idea for her to hold her weave up, then twirl it and saunter off the stage like Naomi Cambell. I bet he’s ferosh.

So what’d you guys think of the fashions? Loved Christian Siriano’s doll clothes? Think I’m wrong about Alicia’s Indian-inspired bindi? Sound off.

Kisses,

Coutura
